back in action! The Feather River has been producing some very angry adult steelhead (if you can land them). A good percentage of these fish are wild! Most mayfly and caddis patterns will do the trick. The hard part is not so much getting the fish to take your fly, but knowing what to do once you get them on. It's quite a wild ride! Definitely bigger, more aggressive fish than last season. Bring your 3x tippet and at least a 6wt rod. Hooked a few that were worthy of a 7wt. All of the rivers are completely blown out!

The Yuba needs to be down around 5000 CFS. max, with at least two ft. of visibility, and that's if you are fishing out of a drift boat. We floated the Yuba River from Daguerre Point Dam down about 7 miles. Had a fair day - hooked 7 fish. One was 18" and the next largest was around 16". That wasn't the highlight, though. The best part of the trip was that we saw NO ONE. Having exclusive drift boat access to this part of the river has the benefit of fishing without all the pressure. Fish seemed to be taking rubber legged stones, WD-40's size 18, and had success swinging olive wooly buggers. Give me a call- 916-224-7444 - if you want to float this section of the Yuba.

<img style="display: block; Rachael put together some healthy assorted vegetables with homemade ranch dressing, and some addictive homemade triple ginger molasses cookies. But enough of that.

We saw some real progress in everyone's casting and fishing abilities by the end of the class. We had fish raising all around us, and it was just too much for one of the students to handle, so we put on some flies to "match the hatch." He hooked three fish and landed two! Another veteran student came to class with a nice casting stroke and wanted to learn the double-haul. By the end of the class he was able make some nice double-haul casts. The beginning students saw huge progress. Casting strokes got smooth, and more compact, and loops really tightened up for everyone. It was a fun class!

Anyone interested in my April 17th 8am-10am class let me know. There are two openings left. The fishing was slooowww. Prior to meeting up with me, they had one hook-up, and then I had one hook-up, but none landed. I'm still waiting to hear from them to see what the rest of their trip was like. They're good fishermen, so if they came up empty you know it's bad.
There are really no prolific hatches right now; just a couple of March Browns, some PMD's, and a few caddis. Looks like the skawlas are done (although we are still having some success on skawla nymphs...just not today). River flows are around 850 and running clear.

Should start to see more caddis and PMDs in the coming weeks. Already saw a couple of yellow sallies last week. Probably wont be too much longer before the action starts picking up again.

We had such a great Winter, I wont complain about a slow early Spring!

~Dave
www.intheloopfishing.com

Class dates for Fly Fishing on the Yuba

The April 3rd Fly Fishing class is full!
There are still a few spots left in the April 17th and May 1st classes.
